Google Ads or Meta Ads? How Singapore SMEs should choose
One catches people already searching, the other puts you in front of people who have not started yet. Here is how to pick.

Most small businesses in Singapore have heard they should "run ads", but not where to begin. The two main choices, Google Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram), work in very different ways, and picking the wrong one first is a common and expensive mistake.
The core difference: intent versus attention
Google Search ads appear when someone types what they want, such as "aircon servicing near me". The person is already looking, so they are often ready to act. Meta ads appear while people scroll. They are not looking for you yet, so the ad has to catch attention and create interest.
When Google Ads is usually the better first choice
- People search for your service when they have an urgent need: locksmiths, plumbers, clinics, repair services.
- Your service is specific and people know what to type.
- You want enquiries quickly and can handle phone calls or WhatsApp promptly.
When Meta Ads is usually the better first choice
- Your product is visual or driven by impulse: food, beauty, fashion, events, fitness.
- People do not search for it by name, so you need to introduce it.
- You run promotions, launches or seasonal offers.

Using both together
The channels work well as a pair. Meta ads create awareness and demand. Google then catches the people who go on to search for you by name or for what you offer. If budget is limited, start with the one that best fits how your customers buy, and add the second when the first is working.
Set it up so you can learn
- Track what counts: phone calls, WhatsApp taps and form enquiries, not just clicks.
- Start with a budget cap you can sustain for at least a month or two.
- Send people to a page that matches the ad, not just your home page.
- Give each campaign one clear goal and one clear next step.
Common mistakes
- Boosting posts without a goal or any tracking.
- Targeting everyone in Singapore instead of the people and areas you actually serve.
- Judging ads by clicks or likes instead of cost per enquiry.
- Changing everything every few days, so nothing can be learned.
How to judge whether ads are working
Look at what an enquiry costs you and how much a customer is worth to you. If an enquiry costs less than you earn from it, after your own costs, the ads are working and can be scaled carefully. If not, fix the offer or the page before raising the budget. We agree this target in writing before any campaign launches, and our free audit is a good place to start.
